Several investigators have recently claimed to show that inflation takes place in all Bianchi models and that therefore anisotropy does not suppress inflation. It is shown here that these calculations are only valid in the zero-shear limit of orthogonal models (models without rotation and acceleration). However, the scalar field is not coupled to the fluid so a simple demonstration can be given that, within certain caveats, the results is nonetheless true. This demonstration is valid in all Bianchi classes except curvature-dominated type IX. A plausibility argument suggests that the conclusion will not hold in inhomogeneous cosmologies.
