The present state of the theoretical analysis of strongly interacting matter, based on quantum chromodynamics, is discussed. The experimental search for a predicted new state of matter, the quark plasma, which is starting this year is examined. The results obtained by computer simulation of statistical systems in this area are reviewed. The successive stages of an experimental high-energy nuclear collision are outlined, and their use to study the predicted quark matter is discussed.
