Scientific paper

Basic observational facts of magnetic fields in galaxies and their
generation by a hydromagnetic dynamo are summarized. Special attention
is drawn to the nonaxisymmetric field structure in spiral galaxies and
several ideas are provided to explain the various cases in terms of
dynamo action influenced by the spiral arms.
