We have measured different aspects of plasma evolution in hohlraums illuminated by the NOVA laser. Toroidal hohlraums produce long scale length, hot plasmas to estimate the laser reflectivity levels expected on NIF due to SRS and SBS. We use x-ray spectroscopic techniques to find how electron temperature varies with hohlraum gas fill and laser intensity. Scale-1 hohlraums are used to implode fuel capsules. Using a thinner gold wall, 2 instead of the standard 25 microns, x-ray emission from both the capsule implosion and also laser beam absorption at the hohlraum wall are detected simultaneously. Thus imploded core eccentricity, varying from prolate (or sausaged) to oblate (or pancaked), can be correlated with the axial position of the laser beam absorption. With a hohlraum gas fill, like methane, the laser beam absorption locations shift, and gold wall plasma blow-off is modified. The relative brightness and time history of the laser spots at the hohlraum wall should provide a useful measure of beam balance, pointing, and timing.
