The International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 will be the largest and most interdisciplinarypolar science project ever. DavidCarlson, director of the IPY International ProgrammeOffice (IPO), reports that some50,000 investigators from more than 60 countriesorganized in more than 200 internationalclusters of projects will endeavor tostudy nearly every aspect of the poles. Theprojects cover a broad range of physical, life,and social sciences. The data from theseprojects will be unprecedented in theirbreadth and diversity and will be the primarylegacy of IPY.
