Scientific paper

The paper describes the six-meter altazimuth telescope which has been designed in the Soviet Union. The telescope has been constructed in the southwestern region, on the north slope of the Caucasus mountain range at an elevation of 2,100 meters. Attention is given to the mounting configuration, the principal optical components, and the actual construction which is based on a trispherical system of axes. The primary mirror is discussed, noting the control of factors which can distort the shape of the reflecting surface (such as the mirror's own weight, and temperature changes). The guiding system is reviewed with regard to its three sub-systems: (1) automatic guiding, (2) a system to compensate for field rotation, and (3) automatic photoelectric guiding.
