Roble's (1975) midlatitude diurnal model of the ionospheric F region is extended to include auroral processes and used to study the coupled time-dependent ionospheric and atmospheric processes associated with auroral events. Primary ionization rates and electron-production spectra due to aurorae are calculated and directly coupled into the secondary electron-transport portion of the ionospheric model; the coupled continuity equations include diffusion of the minor neutral constituents N (2D), N (4S), and NO. A series of numerical experiments is run with the auroral model to examine the time history of the coupled ionospheric/atmospheric response to direct auroral electron precipitation. The results show that: (1) the coupled response is dependent on the spectral energy distribution, flux magnitude, and time history of the precipitation; (2) soft-spectrum aurorae primarily affect the F region through variations in electron temperature, electron and ion density, and 6300-A airglow emission rate; (3) the ionospheric effects occur in both the E and F regions as the particle spectrum hardens; and (4) the ionospheric disturbances are virtually restricted to the E region for a hard-spectrum aurora with an average electron energy of 10 keV or greater.
