The rate of cooling of white dwarfs, which is known from observations, is used to obtain upper bounds on the coupling of light scalars with matter. For sufficiently large coupling constants the scalars are confined in the dwarf, but the thermal conduction in the inner regions of the sun increases unacceptably. The introduction of additional fermions, interacting strongly with the scalars, makes a narrow range of values λe,N ≡ 3x10-4 acceptable.
