Electrons between 2,000 and 13,500 km altitude above the nightside auroral oval during magnetic quiet times are investigated. The electrons are classified into two populations, structured electrons with characteristic energies below 1 keV and unstructured electrons, which are further classified into isotropic and trapped particles. The spatial regions where the different populations were found are investigated, and results indicate that the spatial regions of both structured and unstructured electrons form continuous belts. The average latitude of the structured electrons was shown to be higher than that of unstructured electrons, and regions partially overlapped at all magnetic local times at noon. Conclusions are drawn concerning the electron sources of the different regions by studying their plasma properties and their mapping into the magnetosphere. It is found that the brightest auroras are normally found in the region where the structured and unstructured populations overlap.
