The instability of fast magneto-acoustic waves propagating near the equatorial plane ahead of a heliospheric shock front where the solar wind is retarded by the cosmic-ray pressure gradient is investigated. The unstable waves with the highest increment are propagated normal to the equatorial plane. The direction of the propagation of these waves depends on the polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field.
