A two-dimensional MHD simulation is used to study the plasma dynamics associated with both single and multiple X-line reconnection processes. The impulsive nature of the reconnection process and the recurrence time of the formation and convection of magnetic islands is examined. It is found that the plasma dynamics in the single X-line reconnection is generally consistent with the reconnection models by Petschek (1964) and Sonnerup (1979), but that the outflow plasma speed is considerably smaller than the predicted upstream Alfven speed. In the case of multiple X-line reconnection, repeated formation and convection of magnetic islands are observed with a recurrence time of 10t(A)/R(0), where t(A) is the Alfven transit time and R(0) is the imposed driving rate. The simulation results are generally consistent with satellite observations of flux transfer events.
