Implications of the observations of P/Halley for the problem of comet aging are discussed. It is suggested that the active lifetimes of short-period comets are intermitted by dormant phases. These are tentatively identified for several short-period comets by the absence of prediscovery observations on occasions when they should have been very bright and favourably placed. The concept of secular brightness decrease of comets appears untenable, since events occurring on shorter time scales are more outstanding than the general trend. A classification of the variety of such events is attempted.
