The SP-2 experiment on Vega studied the spatial and mass distributions of dust particles in the cometary coma over the mass range from 10 to the minus 16th to minus 6th power g. Results support the concept developed by Whipple (1950) of a cometary nucleus being an aggregate of ices and solid particles, as well as the major guidelines of the cometary models constructed when preparing the missions. The principal unexpected results of measurements on Vega spacecraft are the discovery of a high number density of the smallest dust particles, of a very narrow angular pattern in the dust emission from the nucleus, and of the variability in the dust particle mass distribution at different distances from the nucleus.
