The bow shock at comet Halley is formed by the interaction between three different particle populations; solar wind ions, cometary ions and electrons. The authors follow the development of the density, temperature and flow velocity of the solar wind ions at the inbound shock from the beginning of the foreshock region at 1825 SCET through to the sheath. The approach to the bow shock is marked by a series of waves of increasing amplitude in which the speed is reduced and the flow is deflected almost out of the field-of-view. There are several crossings of the boundary before the spacecraft enters the sheath for the last time.
