Recent observations by TRACE clearly show that the solar corona is both highly structured and highly time variable. To understand the physics behind the dynamical coronal processes, future observations should determine not only the morphology, but also the physical condition of the plasma. This task is best accomplished by imaging spectroscopy of the corona. However, currently planned and operating instruments fail to provide the necessary measurements at the relevant spatial and temporal scales. This paper presents the concept of an EUV imaging spectrograph that overcomes many of the limitations of current designs. The concept focusses on high sensitivity over a limited spectral range, and achieves spectroscopy with full spatial coverage at TRACE-like resolution, cadence, and signal-to-noise ratio.
