Data from six pairs of coincident MAGSAT passes over the Indian region were studied jointly to ascertain the nature of the long-wavelength trend left after removal of core and external current contributions. It has been concluded that the trend is mainly due to an inappropriate estimate of the external current contributions. As the external and its induced internal parts are calculated in a least squares sense, the presence of a crustal component in the fitted data seems to affect the estimates. Though the MAGSAT orbit was chosen in the dawn-dusk meridian to minimize ionospheric contributions, the results of the present study confirm that some passes do contain ionospheric contributions. In reaching these conclusions, use has been made of the special location of the Indian region where the declination is only 1 to 2 deg.
