I discuss wide-field high resolution spectroscopic instruments in the context of Gaia and Galactic archaeology. Galactic archaeology aims to discover signatures or fossils from the epoch of Galaxy formation, to give observational insights into the processes which took place as the Galaxy was assembled. Chemical tagging based on large high resolution spectroscopic surveys will soon become a significant part of Galactic archaeology. Much of the discussion is focussed on prospects for the new HERMES instrument on the AAT.
