We propose to use the WFPC2 to make high-resolutionobservations of the surface and atmosphere of Mars just before (orduring) the March 1997 opposition. These observations will employ PCexposures with full-aperture filters, the methane quad filter, andLinear Ramp Filters. This 9-filter sequence must be repeated 4times in orbits that are scheduled at 6 hour intervals within single24-hour period. This scheduling will insure that we sample sub-Earthlongitudes separated by about 90 degrees, providing full-disk coveragewith a minimum of foreshortening. One of the 4 orbits should bescheduled such that the longitude of the proposed Mars Pathfinderlanding site (32.8 W - Ares Vallis) is located near the sub-Earth pointon Mars. This pointing will allow us to support the Mars PathfinderMission by (1) providing additional information about the local climateand airborne dust abundance 4 months before the arrival of thatspacecraft, and (2) providing regional context for the surfacemineralogy sampled by Pathfinder instruments. In addition to thoseobjectives, this program will provide spectrally-resolved global mapsof airborne dust, ice, and ozone distributions, the surface icedistribution, and the surface iron mineralogy. This information willfacilitate the development or more reliable models of the Martianatmospheric chemistry climate. It can also be combined with MarsPathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor observations to yield
