This proposal is for far-UV imaging and spectroscopy of Jupiter's auroral emissions in the H Ly-alpha {1216 Angstrom} and H_2 Lyman and Werner bands {1150-1650 Angstrom} at the same time as scheduled GALILEO spacecraft measurements of Jupiter's magnetospheric properties and UV emissions in Fall 1996 and Spring 1997. The HST data will extend our existing WFPC 2 images and GHRS spectra of Jupiter's auroral emissions from a cycle 5 program to be scheduled in July 1996 during a period of intensive GALILEO observations of Jupiter. Because the GALILEO mission does not have an auroral imager, these observations are key to the interpretation of the GALILEO magnetospheric and auroral data to determine the relative intensity and spatial distribution of auroral activity during GALILEO sequences. We propose supporting observations during each observable UVS auroral sequence in cycle 6, and one additional WFPC 2 imaging series coincident with particles and fields measurements during one orbital pass near Jupiter.
