The yellow giant S1040 (V=11.52, bv = 0.88) in M67 is asingle-lined spectroscopic binary that shows the following twoanomalies. First, S1040 occupies a ``red straggler'' positionin the M67 color-magnitude diagram, 0.2 mag blueward of thered giant branch. Second, S1040 was detected at 1520Angstrom on an image of M67 obtained with the UltravioletImaging Telescope (UIT), with an ultraviolet flux far abovethat expected from its optical colors. The most likelyexplanation for these two anomalies is that the secondary ofS1040 is a hot white dwarf, and that the peculiar position ofS1040 in the color-magnitude diagram is due to previous masstransfer from the white dwarf progenitor. If this scenariois correct, then S1040 is an evolutionary descendant of a M67blue straggler. We propose to obtain a GHRS G140L spectrum ofS1040 centered at 1320 Angstrom, in order to confirm the whitedwarf identification, and to derive the white dwarftemperature and gravity from the Ly alpha profile. The whitedwarf cooling age and mass can then be derived usingevolutionary models. Used in conjunction with the known ageand metallicity of M67, these parameters will allow us toconstrain models of the binary stellar evolution of S1040, andevaluate its possible origin as a blue straggler.
