Hst Proposal Id #6664 Stellar Populations

Scientific paper

Shallow two-filter and deep single-filter stellar photometry will be obtained with WFPC2 in M 32 and M 31 in order to isolate the fraction of the stellar populations in M 32 with ages less than about 4 Gyr. The M 32 field is 4 arcmin to the SE of galaxy center. An M 31 control field 10 arcmin to the NE will also be observed in an identical fashion. M 31 and M 32 RR Lyrae variables will be detected, measuring the fraction of the metal-poor population which is older than 10 Gyr. Accurate periods and luminosities will be obtained for less than 5% of the variables detected.
