If chondrules are formed via ablation, from the interaction of a streaming gas flow with a body whose size is much larger than that of the average chondrule, the gas flow speed would have to be less than 25 km/sec, with gas densities of more than 10 exp -8 g/cu cm; maximum chondrule radius would have to be 1 cm, and the radius of chondrule-formation bodies would be of the order of 400 m at least. These densities and temperatures arise only within about 0.1 AU of the protosun. It is suggested that optical jets and molecular outflows could have produced chondrules and furnished the requisite transport out of the solar nebula.
