We use a simplified galaxy model to investigate whether extinction of GRB afterglow emission can be used to study the evolution of dust in their hosts. Evolution of galaxies is taken into account through geometric changes and evolution of gas and dust masses in their star forming disks. For a given observer-frame wavelength, the extinction increases with redshift according to the blue-shifted sampling of the model dependent shape of the extinction curve. To match the observations of afterglow extinction values down-scaling relative to an L* galaxy template is required, as expected from the known properties of GRB host galaxies.
