We have used medium resolution spectra (about 5 A, S/N about 100) of field stars in the Magellanic Clouds to derive abundances of various atomic species. This was done using synthetic spectra which we have computed. Our results show that the mean abundances of solar (Fe/H)* ratio in field stars of the SMC and LMC are respectively -0.46 dex and -0.19 dex, and thus agree well with those obtained recently by other authors using high-resolution spectra of stars in these galaxies. Carbon abundances are also obtained from the CH band for the coolest stars.
