We present recent results on two Type II supernovae (SNe) with rather extreme properties, the low luminosity SN 2005 ay and the very bright Type IIn SN 2006 gy. They lie at the opposite tails of the luminosity distribution of Type II SNe and provide us with invaluable information on the physical properties of these events and their connection with their progenitor systems.
