From only one semester of observations the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey (UDS) is already the deepest near-infrared survey ever conducted over 0.8 sq degrees. The year-one data reach median 5σ Vega depths of K=21.6 and J=22.8 over this area, based on 86 hours of observation. In this meeting we described progress with the UDS and presented the first science results. These include the first study of the clustering of bright Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs), the discovery of luminous Lyman-break galaxies at z>5 and strong evidence for the disappearance of the galaxy red sequence at redshifts z>1.5. Based on only the first 12 hours of data, these early results give a promising indication of the likely scientific return from this survey.
