As the Galileo mission draws towards its close, the spacecraft has been sent on more and more daring flybys of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io. And Io has obliged with three giant volcanic eruptions within the last year, all in the north polar region, and larger than any transient eruptions in the previous four years of the Galileo mission. The latest one produced the tallest plume yet seen and Galileo flew through it. In the left-hand column of images (a, d, e), one can see the plumes from two of these eruptions, as well as the plume from the almost permanently active volcano Pele.
