Analysis of a photometric time series of the LMC cluster NGC 1846 showed a number of long period variables. With the help of a period- luminosity diagram several of the brighter ones of these stars could be attributed to first overtone pulsation while no variable was found to pulsate in fundamental mode. This is an interesting point for understanding the P-L-diagram of long period variables and for relating mass loss and stellar pulsation. Data previously obtained cover a time span too short to determine the periods of the long period targets appropriately. We thus propose to obtain an additional photometric time series to provide an accurate P-L-diagram for studying pulsation and mass loss in this well defined stellar environment.
