Diffractive and nondiffractive production of charmed particles in primary collisions of very-high-energy cosmic rays with atmospheric nuclei is investigated theoretically, with a focus on the resulting prompt muon production, and published observations of the angular distribution of muon intensity at various depths are analyzed. The results are presented in tables and graphs, and it is found that prompt muons may make up as much as 0.1 percent of the muon flux (depending on the gamma value) in the TeV-PeV energy range, but that this contribution remains within the range predicted by the theoretical model.
