The role of the loss cone in modulating the processes that are responsible for auroral precipitation in the morningside auroral zone is studied. The role of flux limiting and pitch angle diffusion in determining the structure of the morningside auroral structure is discussed. A new bounce-averaged formulation of the pitch angle diffusion equations that overcomes many of the objections regarding bounce averaging in the loss cone is described. A formalism for treating the temporal structure of energetic electron precipitation is developed, and it is shown how the temporal structure is controlled by the feedback between wave growth and precipitation. The mechanism that leads to repeated auroral pulsations is considered, developing a new set of coupled equations for the growth of waves and the pitch angle diffusion of electrons. These equations lead to repetitive precipitation pulsations with periods of 3 to 30 sec.
