An analytical model is developed to characterize the phase shift that occurs when charged particles encounter an electrical field applied in parallel to the gravitational field. A formulation is defined which quantifies the phase shift expected at the exit of the arms of an interferometer. The shift in the vertical is the Colella-Overhauser-Werner (COW) value (1975) when a gravitational field is applied. It is shown that at relativistic energies a different phase shift emerges due to the velocity dependencies of the gravitational and electrical fields. The new phase shift is a function of the potential of the force, the relativistic energy term and the COW value. Sample computations demonstrate that detection of the shift effect in the case of neutrons would require a mean potential of 100 MeV, which would produce about one fringe shift in an interferometer.
