Electron acoustic waves present in a two temperature electron plasma can
be driven unstable when ion beams propagate along the magnetic field.
Both linear theory and numerical simulations indicate that this
instability contributes to the generation of broadband electrostatic
noise (BEN) in the geomagnetic tail.
