The behavior of the solar limb darkening function at the extreme limb is of importance in establishing the temperature gradient at the onset of the transition region between the photosphere and chromosphere. Julius (1906, 1913) suggested that the measurement of the rapidly varying light intensity from the solar crescent preceding or following totality during a solar eclipse was capable of giving the limb darkening function at the extreme limb. The present investigation is concerned with observations of the type suggested by Julius. The observations were conducted during the eclipses of March 7, 1970, July 10, 1972, June 30, 1973, and February 26, 1979. The best light curves were obtained during the 1970 and 1979 eclipses and the results reported are based on them.
