The effects of dynamic smoothing of attitude data on the Hipparcos satellite observation program are summarized. Smoothing can be used either to increase homogeneity of results or to improve results for given stars. The latter is advocated, since homogeneity without smoothing is sufficient for applications of the results. Greater weight should thus be given to the relative accuracy of parallaxes in order to calibrate each spectral type. Proper motions can be used to eliminate systematic errors in present catalogs. The Tycho experiment (which uses satellite attitude control star mappers for astrometry) can be used to increase the number of reference stars for photographic work.
