A theoretical framework is proposed for the extraction of information on the monoenergicity of ejected jet beams, as well as their finite angular size and possible microscopic random motions, from the widths of Doppler-shifted emission features in SS 433. Application of the model to 150 spectra covering more than four cycles of the 164-day period of SS 433 leads to the detection of the expected periodic line width variations. The relative spread of velocities in the region of the jets which is responsible for the optical emission is found to be small, and this exceptionally smooth flow places severe constraints on the beam acceleration and collimation mechanisms.
