Grand unified theories predict the existence of superheavy magnetic
monopoles. Combining these theories with standard big band cosmology
appears to lead to the conclusion that an unacceptably large abundance
of these would have been produced in the early universe. Several
proposed mechanisms for suppressing the monopole abundance are reviewed.
