The mechanisms by which the energy of precipitating particles and solar ultraviolet radiation absorbed at heights of about 90 km is converted to infrared radiation are studied for the upper atmosphere by means of a theoretical model. It is shown that infrared radiation in the 1.2-20 micron range is more intense than the 63 micron oxygen line and plays an important role in the general energy balance and heat regime of the thermosphere. Radiation in the 5.3 micron band of NO is found to be the most intense infrared band at a height of about 120 km.
