Scientific paper

An analysis is made of the preflare situation and of the flare of 23 August 1988. The flare was preceded by high activity in the filament region, and by the appearance of a dark filament-like structure which was later replaced by one of flaring ribbons. A weak separation of flare ribbons, the absence of Hα-observable loops connecting ribbons, and a manifestation of supergranulation cells in the structure of ribbons were observed. The observational data are briefly discussed; two possible alternative explanations for the role of a dark filament-like structure in the flare are proposed.
