The records of sunspot numbers for the period 1749-1990 were analyzed using the technique currently applied in the study of stellar activity cycles observed with the Mount Wilson Observatory's 60-in telescope (e.g., Baliunas and Vaughan, 1985; Baliunas, 1991). In order to mimic the stellar time series, the 20-yr and 50-yr intervals of the sunspot data were analyzed and compared to the entire record. The mean solar cycle period determined from the entire record was found to be 11.04 yrs, computed with a precision of +/-0.01, but with an overall accuracy of only +/-1.1 year caused by variation of the cycle period with time. The 'correct' sunspot period was found more often (82 percent) in the 50-yr intervals than in the 20-yr intervals (74 percent). The possible causes for this are discussed.
