We discuss the occurrence of super-Eddington atmospheres, how such atmospheres can exist, the winds that they generate, and how their understanding can be applied to various luminous objects. In particular, we study them in the context of classical novae. We show that inhomogeneities are the key to understanding these atmospheres and the winds that they generate are the key to understanding these objects as a whole.
