We present new phase-resolved, high-resolution spectroscopy of AM Herculis analysed with indirect imaging techniques. Doppler tomography reveals a focused accretion stream, which does not follow the expected ballistic trajectory and does not connect to the Roche lobe at the L1-point. The Roche lobe of the secondary star is resolved in the NaI absorption and Ca II emission lines, whose front side is strongly affected by the X-ray/UV heating from the accretion region.
