The theory of low mass stars and brown dwarfs has considerably improved over the past years. I will present the main progress in the physics and the modeling of such objects and the recent success of the theory to describe observations for stellar and substellar objects. Such improvement of the theory is now applied to the study of secondaries in cataclysmic variable systems. The confrontation with available observations of secondaries illustrates also the progress in the field, though discrepancies with observations still remain.
