The S800 spectrograph at MSU was used to perform spectroscopic measurements of the ^24Mg(^7Li,^8He)^23Al and ^28Si(^7Li,^8He)^27P reactions. The purpose of the experiment was to measure the first excited levels in these two nuclei which dominate the resonant proton capture on ^22Mg and ^26Si in the rp-process in novae and x-ray bursts. Masses and excited states of both ^23Al and ^27P were measured. Several states in these nuclei were measured for the first time. The first excited state of ^23Al was resolved from the ground state for the first time and found to be at 550(20) keV. The first excited state of ^27P was observed for the first time and found to be at 1.119(19) MeV. Astrophysical implications of the new results to nucleosynthesis in rp-process sites will be discussed.
