Milagrito was a prototype phase of the Milagro experiment, and operated from February 1997 to May 1998. Milagrito was a water Cherenkov detector for air showers created by gamma rays, and background cosmic rays. The data have been studied for emission from several nearby blazars. Emission from Markarian 501 is detected coincident with the large flare observed in 1997 by atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes.
