The size distributions of several observable parameters of solar flares are examined in order to clarify certain aspects of proton-flare behavior. Distribution functions are presented for solar soft and hard X radiation, microwave bursts, and proton fluxes; the distributions had been measured at different times and for flares of different magnitude ranges. It is shown that protons have a flatter distribution of occurrence than the other flare parameters, that proton production depends very strongly on total flare energy, and that the uncertainty in proton-event size distributions permits an interpretation in terms of some absolute threshold. It is concluded that the second-stage acceleration mechanism operates much more efficiently for more energetic flares, with large fluxes having more than proportionally greater proton production.
