It is suggested that the recently discovered object named Chiron (generally agreed to be an asteroid) may have been inserted into its present orbit after having been successively perturbed, or perhaps even temporarily captured, by the gravitational fields of Jupiter and Saturn. Thus it is possible that Chiron is one of a group of about 40 faint asteroids with orbital semimajor axes larger than that of Saturn; a population of about 300 asteroids with apparent magnitude up to 15 and orbits between Jupiter and Saturn may also exist.
