An expression is developed for the energy deposition in the magnetosphere-ionosphere system in terms of upstream solar wind parameters. It is found that only some types of electric current in the magnetosphere systematically transfer energy into the magnetosphere from the solar wind. These are the magnetotail current system and the field-aligned current at the northern edge of the auroral oval. Mechanisms are suggested for various magnetospheric processes in order to calculate energy input. These include: flow through the shock and in the magnetosheath, merging, reconnection and the magnetotail neutral line, and Alfven layer shielding of the inner magnetosphere from convective flow, nightside pressure balances, and precipitation. It is found that energy input via the nightside plasma sheet is dominated by the strength and orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field and the velocity of the solar wind.
