An investigation is made of electric field topology near the dayside magnetopause using in situ spacecraft observations of plasma and magnetic field parameters. Both local and global viewpoints are considered. It is suggested that there is no reconnection electric field tangential to the dayside magnetopause, and the magnetopause is nearly an equipotential surface. The significance of the boundary layer inside the magnetopause is reviewed, noting that it must be polarized. Thus it is a type of dipole sheet, transferring the electric field of the external magnetosheath into the magnetosphere.
