Particle scattering in pure magnetic turbulence is investigated by combining the Newton-Lorentz equation with the well-established nonlinear guiding center theory. Cross field diffusion coefficients are calculated as well as certain limits in particle energy and turbulence strength. In addition to the well-known nonlinear results we find a new contribution which describes particle scattering away from a single field line. In particular, perpendicular diffusion can be described as a superposition of scattering due to wandering magnetic field lines and scattering away from a single field line. As an example, the new results are used to calculate the maximum energy of protons accelerated at perpendicular interplanetary shock waves driven by a coronal mass ejection.
