Dark clouds host a variety of star-forming scenarios, the earliest phases of which are best seen at far infrared to millimeter wavelengths. Variations in the chemical and physical properties of the clouds can now be probed with Mopra's MOPS correlator in a novel way: studying a variety of star forming environments in nearby dark clouds with the same (theoretically-motivated) set of millimeter molecular transitions. We will compare a large number of line properties in starless cores, cores thought to be on the brink of formation and also those seen to be actively forming stars. By combining these observations with UNSW's detailled modelling of Galactic gas and its chemistry, we can create a unique overview of the transition of a molecular cloud from quiescence into star forming activity.
